‘Tis the season for making resolutions for the upcoming year! Some of the most common and popular resolutions are losing weight, eating more healthfully, spending more time with family and… flossing??? The new year is a great opportunity to improve your oral and overall health by taking up a new great habit – daily flossing!
Regardless of which method of getting between your teeth you choose (check out our alternatives to flossing!), if you are not cleaning in between your teeth, you are missing up to 30% of surfaces and leaving inflammation causing bacteria behind. Bacteria that will surely cause cavities and gum disease over time.
As dental health care providers, we hear all the excuses as to why a patient does not floss. More often than not, it is related to flossing not being a habit. In the new year, we often think of starting fresh and creating those healthy habits. This year, why not make flossing one of them? You will certainly make your dental hygienist happy when you are next asked the dreaded “how often are you flossing?”. Even more likely, your hygienist will notice less bleeding and inflammation and be able to guess that you have picked up a new habit!
