Unique Dental Needs of Seniors

Throughout our life stages our oral health care needs change.  Today, we would like to discuss the unique dental needs of seniors – what seniors can do for homecare to support these needs as well as what we can do as oral healthcare providers.

  1. Dry Mouth. As we age, it becomes much more common to experience the symptoms of dry mouth.  This can not only be extremely uncomfortable, but it will increase the risk of cavities.  There are many products on the market that can help ease the symptoms of dry mouth.  Further, we recommend a patient experiencing symptoms see their oral healthcare provider as often as every 3 months to help manage symptoms and prevent cavities.  Check out our previous blog addressing this health concern here: https://simcoefamilydentistry.com/2018/12/12/dry-mouth-and-your-risk-for-cavities/
  2. Concern for Yellowing Teeth. Over time, the teeth can become a bit dull in colour. Depending on overall and oral health you may be a candidate to try a take-home or in-office whitening procedure to help brighten the smile.  Alternatively, there are more permanent options to change not only the colour, but the appearance of the teeth.  Speak to your dental office to explore the options available to you.
  3. Missing Teeth. While many adults are enjoying a full dentition well into their 90’s, it is not uncommon to have missing teeth for various reasons.  Replacing missing teeth helps you to stay healthy by enabling you to eat nutritionally, helps with self-esteem, and can give a more youthful appearance by providing support to the cheeks and lips.
  4. Some retirement plans do not include health and dental care.  While the government of Ontario is looking into addressing oral health care for low income seniors, it is not a reality yet.  We feel very strongly that regular dental care will enhance your quality of life for the reasons previously discussed.  We are proud to provide a Seniors Program that provides a discount for all seniors regardless of insurance status.

Different life stages require a unique approach to health.  At Simcoe Family Dentistry, we are able to provide great healthcare and service for all ages we and would love to welcome you to our warm, friendly office!
