Sweet Tooth? How to Fight Those Sugar Cravings!

Sweet Tooth? How to Fight Those Sugar Cravings!

Many of us have a sweet tooth and an affinity for sugary sweets, yet we know the damage they cause to tooth enamel (and the waistline!). So what to do about your sugary cravings? There are a few tried and true methods!

  1. Chew sugar free gum. Bonus if it is sweetened with xylitol which actually helps to combat cavity development! Xylitol will help to stimulate salivary production, as well as curb the sugar cravings.
  2. Brush your teeth. Sometimes all it takes to curb a sugar craving is brushing the teeth. Once you have that fresh feeling after brushing, the last thing you will want to do is eat something you know is not great for you. Further, brushing will alter your taste perception where having a sweet treat might not taste as good as usual.
  3. Make sure you are getting enough protein. Protein helps curb a sweet tooth by giving your body a cue that it is full. Protein also helps by increasing dopamine levels, which is the brain’s reward hormone.
  4. Eat something with natural sugar. Try a healthy piece of fruit the next time you are craving a sugary treat. It might just do the trick with an added dose of vitamins as well as fiber.

As you can see, there are a few strategies in dealing with cravings. If you try any of these methods, please send us some feedback! We would love to hear what has worked for you!
