How Botox Treats Jaw Pain

BOTOX and Temporomandibular Joint Disorders

Curious as to how Botox treats jaw pain? Are you one of the many Barrie residents with untreated jaw pain?  Do you have pain when yawning, chewing or maybe notice that you are grinding and clenching your teeth?  Are you experiencing regular headaches that radiate into your ear and temple?  You may have a Temporomandibular Joint Disorder (TMD) that may be treated with BOTOX in Barrie.

Symptoms of TMD:

  • Pain in the jaw joint
  • Pain that radiates to the ear
  • Grinding or clenching the teeth
  • Frequent headaches
  • Clicking or popping in the jaw joint
  • Jaw soreness or stiffness in the morning

What causes TMD?

TMD can be caused by stress, grinding and clenching the teeth, arthritis or by trauma to the jaw, neck or head.  TMD may also be caused by a misalignment of the teeth.

How does BOTOX work to treat TMD?

BOTOX works on the TMJ (Temporomandibular Joint) by blocking the nerves that cause the jaw muscles to painfully contract.  For some people, BOTOX treats jaw pain by helpinh to significantly decrease the pain associated with TMD by relaxing these contracted muscles.

Often the treatment of TMD involves a combination of treatments.  After your initial exam by your Barrie dentist, treatment options unique to your symptoms will be discussed.

Treatments for jaw pain may include the following:

  • BOTOX
  • Massage therapy
  • Exercises for the jaw joint
  • Fabrication of a nightguard
  • Orthodontics to correct the bite
